THE YEAR WAS 1958 . . . THE NEW YORK YANKEES won the World Series
against Milwaukee, EXPLORER I, United States of America’s
first satellite, was launched into space, and Calolympic Glove
Company opened the doors for business. From its humble beginnings
in a warehouse/office space behind a retail store on Magnolia,
our founding father, Joel Halpern, along with Bob Cappel, worked
long, hard hours to put Calolympic into everyone’s Rolodex
as their glove supplier. In 1963, tragedy struck, as a fire raged
through the building, virtually destroying all in its path. Thanks
to our vendors—many of whom are still with us today—
rallied around the fragile business and sent truckloads of inventory
to the aid of Joel and Bob. The company returned to the market
place stronger than ever!
Calolympic
Glove saw many changes in the next 50 years. After the fire in
1963, home for Calolympic was 5959 Republic Street for the next
29 years. Sadness struck again in 1967, as Bob Cappel passed away
suddenly, leaving Joel to manage the now thriving business. Leslie
Basney came on board in 1976, managing a San Marcos branch of
operations. Business was booming! Growth had taken hold of what
was once a two-man operation. Gloves were not the only product
on the linecard, either. The new Calolympic Glove and Safety was
now in the business of selling safety related products and services
as well as the fl agship: gloves. Employing about 25 people, Calolympic
once again saw another opportunity for expansion. Dale Bermond,
joining the Calolympic team in November 1984, moved the Riverside
operation to a 30,000 square foot building at 4111 Latham Street
in 1993. Additional growth of market share in 1998 led us to our
existing facility where we remain today. Supplying Homeland Defense
Products as well as Police, Fire and Rescue products have given
us an additional identity in the market known as Flame Tamers.
THE
YEAR IS 2008 . . . 50 YEARS later, Calolympic Safety employs 35
people who are instrumental in creating an established position
in the market place with diversified products lines. Calolympic
Glove & Safety’s proud heritage looks to the future
with positive anticipation due to loyal, hard-working employees,
supportive customers, and valued vendors. Our strong foundation,
lead by president Dale Bermond and strengthened by a determined
staff of employees, continue to seek out new opportunities to
solidify Calolympic for many more years to come.
