Introduction

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States.  Every year, 1 in 4 deaths is caused by heart disease.  It is important to be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of heart attack and stroke so that early interventions can be put to use to minimize damage and save a life.  We will discuss the symptoms of heart attack and stroke, as well as the Chain of Survival that applies to each.

Chain of Survival

The Chain of Survival was initially developed by the American Heart Association in 1990 after decades of research into sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).  25 years later, the Chain of Survival is still in use as each "link" in the chain helps to increase the chances of survival.  We will discuss the Chain of Survival for SCA, as well as the Chain of Survival that has been developed for Stroke.
