Importance of Roadside safety.

Roadside construction workers have a pretty scary job. Always having to be vigilant, because of vehicles driving past them. A construction site on its own has many dangers and now you throw in the possibility of being struck by a vehicle and it becomes that much more dangerous. If you are at a site near a road consider these tips when on the job:

Being aware of your surroundings.

We’ve said it once and we will keep saying it- look at your surroundings and understand where you are on the job site. There are always safety paths designated at these job sites and they need to be followed. If an area has been marked off it has been mark off for a reason and should not be entered. Keep an eye out and don’t allow yourself any distractions, once you get distracted you open yourself up to injuries.

Did you know: Most vehicle accidents occur during the day.

Basically, most motorist understand that driving at night is dangerous and because of this they think it’s ok to break rules during the day. This is an important fact to remember considering that most roadside construction is done during the day.

Be visible.

What’s the number 1 way to stay safe when working on a roadside? Being visible at all times. There’s no real excuse to not be wearing hi-vis clothing. Hi-vis clothing comes in all types of styles now in days. If you are wearing a hi-vis company shirt on a cold morning and decide to toss a black sweater over it, then you have defeated the purpose of the Hi-vis shirt. If you work at night, then make sure the Hi-vis clothing you have also comes with reflective strips. Hi-vis clothing has come a long way not only in styles but also in affordability.

Working on the side of a road is dangerous, no need to make it more dangerous by making yourself hard to see. Do these simple to follow rules and you’ll be good to go.
