What employers should know about PPE

What employers should know about PPE

Personal protective clothing (PPE) is important to understand for keeping your employees safe. There are standards that need to be upheld based on your location and type of work being done. These standards should be understood by both employees and employers. Most employers figure that having their employees wear an orange vest should be enough to not only protect them but also to meet state standards, this however is just not true.

The Standards-

OSHA, ANSI, and other health agencies were created to help make sure companies are taking all precautions to properly protect their employees. Vests, glasses, gloves even boots have to uphold a certain standard and code to be deemed proper PPE. Dimensions of clothing, amount of Hi- visibility material are all factors in determining if a product can be used for work.

The Training-

This is one area where most employers struggle to comply. While it is difficult to take a few hours out of the day to train employees, it’s also vital. OSHA sends out citations to different companies for numerous violations. One of the most common and repeated violations is improper training. Your employees need to know protocols, standards, and personal protective needs for maintaining a safe work environment. These standards change every so often so it’s important to stay on top of them. Performing this training could not only keep you and your employees safe, but can save you money down the road.

The Fit-

Even if the PPE you’re wearing is OSHA and ANSI approved, it still needs to fit properly. Having universal fitting PPE, while handy, can lead to injuries and extra costs down the road. This is one of those “quality over quantity” situations - if you buy cheap don’t expect it to last. If a vest, glove, or even pair of glasses don’t fit correctly then they are not going to function properly and, worse, can cause accidents. Whether employees take them off due to being uncomfortable, or having to continuously fettle with them and slow them down, improper fitting PPE can be a hassle to deal with.
